Our fantastic customers Scott and Jo Forbes took a moment to elaborate on a great experience they had with Black Hills, Inc. recently. Thanks so much for sharing!

February 16, 2012

Dear Black Hills,
I can’t say we were enthusiastic about buying a furnace. In fact, we dreaded the prospect. We could have done better maintaining our furnace, but it did get serviced a few times over its modest lifespan. When we called Black Hills, we were hoping only to give our wimpy clunker a good tune-up. I’d heard the ads on the Spirit 105.3 radio station and was impressed. They were different and spoke directly to some of my concerns. Because of those ads, when I received a flyer in the mail, I paid attention.

When Tim Woodbury came out, my husband and I were astounded at the level of effort and time invested in our furnace. It was definitely more thorough than anything we’d had before. A spa treatment for the poor machine! I don’t think we were surprised by the failing report given on our furnace, but we were hesitant to make a major investment, especially in this economy! Tim was highly knowledgeable when he gave us gentle insight into our options. His lack of high-pressure made us more comfortable in setting up an appointment with a salesperson.

I’m sure you’re already anticipating our appreciation for David. That’s why he’s doing sales. Certainly we enjoyed his easy-going nature, but that alone doesn’t sell a furnace. Neither does high-pressure sales. The sales training was evident, but Dave did not win us with refined technique. He navigated our personalities and our needs well. As a salesperson himself, my husband especially admired Dave’s ability to stop talking and listen, as well as allowing silence when contemplated. He did not push the top of the lin, which is a good thing, because if he had overemphasized that, we may have “pushed’” him right out the door. He gave us our options, and asked where WE would like to start, with less or more. That was good. He did a great job. And he was so personable that my 9 Year-old son was offering him snacks and inviting him to play!

With allergies, asthma and a freezing woman in the house, we knew it was time to make a serious investment. Charles Sand came in quietly to do the installation and worked tirelessly, with as little disruption as possible to our day. He was great at addressing our questions and concerns and we were immediately comfortable having him our home. Even better than that, was the un-furnace problem he helped us with. While he was here, our relatively new dishwasher decided to give our kitchen floor a bath. We stood over the pool of water, frustrated and admittedly-helpless. Even after many long hours of work, with many more to go, Charles stopped and came to our aid with the dishwater. He would accept no compensation other than our extreme gratitude. What a lucky day to have a leak?

We have only had our new system in for a few days, but so far, you guys are on a roll! They quality of our air is much improved! And the heat it heavenly! Dave promised we would notice an improvement in the evenness of heat throughout our house and he wasn’t exaggerating. I cannot believe the consistent warmth! We’ve even been able to keep the temperature lower instead of constantly turning it up. In fact, even at a cooler setting, I have been able to remove 2 layers from my daily bundling.

With all of Black Hills promises so far kept, we feel confident that should any problems arise, you will continue to deliver on your word and take great care of our needs.

Here at Black Hills Inc, we are continually concerned with providing the best services, products, and support for our great customers. In addition to our services, we aim to carry state-of-the-art products that will improve the indoor air quality in your home and keep you and your family safe.

Indoor air problems not only post a threat to your home and your family, but also to the continued health of the house and the air systems. Indoor air problems are typically caused from inadequate ventilation in the home and in situations when there is not enough outside air being circulated throughout the home. Additionally, as the air is circulating poorly, materials or devices inside the house that radiate pollutants will continue to disperse these pollutants throughout the already poorly-circulated home, compacting the problem. In addition, higher levels of humidity or heat within the home can increase the quickness with which the air will become polluted.

To resist indoor air quality continuing to decrease, ensure that you have your home properly ventilated, that you are keeping track of items or chemicals that put-out large amounts of pollutants or fumes, and also ensure to have your heating and air conditioning systems check for proper functionality. Call Black Hills Inc. today at +1 (866) 885-7885 to schedule your free estimate

2011/2012 HVAC Tax Credits Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase

2011/2012 HVAC Tax Credits

Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the amount tax and credit based incentives available to Americans meeting certain requirements. Included in these requirements are those that make alterations within their home(s) to become more energy efficient, thus benefitting the environment and in most cases saving homeowners money. Entering 2012, these incentives will continue to exist and might just benefit you and your home.

With a recent bill passed in December, federal taxpayers who install qualified energy efficient units or retrofits (including higher efficiency heating systems, ventilations systems, air conditioning equipment, etc.) may be eligible for up to $500 in tax credits, again depending on the unit and method of installation.

The breakdown of these credits are as follows:
-You can potentially qualify for a 10% tax credit of the unit cost, assuming a $300 expense limit, for a energy-efficient hot water heater, heat pump, or central air conditioner. Additionally, when installing smaller units such as a qualified furnace or hot water boiler, taxpayers may qualify for an additional 10% (up to $150). Installation costs may also merit a credit of 10%, given a $50 limit.

When evaluating this information with the premise of obtaining a new unit, the requirements for a heating system are as follows:
The heat pump must meed or exceed 15 SEER and 12.5 EER and 8.5 HSPF to qualify. Additionally, natural gas furnaces, propane furnaces, natural gas hot water boilers, propane hot water boilers, oil furnaces, and oil hot water boilers all must meet or exceed 95% AFUE.

With incentives like this, it’s really a great time to evaluate both the efficiency and operational price point of your unit. If you have anu questions or would like more information, please contact our office toll-free at +1 (866) 885-7885.

Well, Winter is officially here and in full swing. At Black Hills Heating and Air

Well, Winter is officially here and in full swing. At Black Hills Heating and Air Conditioning, we aim to provide our customers with the absolute best service and products, in addition to helping you save money on heating and cooling costs. While we can completely reinstall a new heating system, furnace, or hot water tank system (tankless or with tank), we also want you to be informed about ways to further prepare your home for winter and to reduce those monthly heating expenses.

Take a look below for some wise tips on winterizing your home and if you have any questions at all about heating, furnaces, or staying comfortable throughout winter, call Black Hills Heating & Air Conditioning at +1 (866) 885-7885!

Black Hills Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning | Winterizing Your Home

2) Begin with a Furnace Inspection (If you have one)

Call the HVAC professionals at Black Hills Heating & Air Conditioning to inspect your furnace and clean your heating ducts. Black Hills Inc. will also be able to supply you with furnace filters and assist you in learning how to change them out on a monthly basis. The technicians may also be able to help you determine ideal programmable settings for your thermostat, so it’s not constantly fluctuating and using more energy. Lastly, the technicians at Black Hills Heating & Air Conditioning can instruct you in the proper way to bleed the valves (if you are using a hot-water radiator). If you’re using an alternate system, they’re more than happy to suggest tips and methods also.

2) Get your Fireplace Ready To Go (If you have one)

Double check that your chimney has a screen or cap to keep out insects or animals that are looking for a warm place to rest. If it’s been quite a while since you had your fireplace cleaned, it’s a good idea to work with a chimney sweep or to talk to Black Hills Heating & Air Conditioning about upgrading your heating system. Make sure you have plenty of wood readily available and in a dry place.

3) Scan the Entire Exterior of your Home, Checking for Cracks or Spaces around Pipes, Doors, or Windows

This can be one of the most important steps in insuring that your home is properly heated for the winer. Even the smallest missed opening can be detrimental when trying to keep your home properly heated and keep the costs down. Weatherstripping on doors and windows is always a good idea, in addition to fixing any cracks or tears in your windows or shades.

4) Scan Your Roof and Gutters

If you live in a climate that regularly gets below freezing, you’ll want to ensure that your attic is properly insulated and not letting all of the warm air from your home escape. Also, ensuring your gutters are clean and functioning well will help prevent again ice or debris buildup during storms. If you don’t live in a freezing climate, it’s still a great idea to do all these things, to ensure that the roof of your home is not a weak point for maintaining a reasonable temperature.

5) Examine Weather-Susceptible Equipment

Double-checking devices with motors and working parts that need to perform throughout winter is always a great idea. If in a snowy climate, drain gas from equipment not in use and ensure all of your winter equipment is functioning properly. In addition, make sure to have weather-related tools (rakes, snow shovels, etc.) readily available in the event you need to clear a path or remove debris.

6) Examine the Foundations of Your Home

Seal all entry points in your foundation to resist animals and insects trying to enter and absorb the heat. It can also be wise to clear away any vegetation or obstructions from the foundation of the house, so there’s room to continually check the seal points.

7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Ask your Black Hills Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning representative to suggest an ideal location for a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and/or water heater to ensure safety all winter long. Test all smoke/carbon detectors in your home to ensure functionality and also purchase or replace your fire extinguishers so you’re fully prepared.

 Prepare Piping to Resist Freezing

Know the location of your main water pipe so you can shut off the water supply to your home if needed. Ensure that all garden hoses and lines are drained and won’t build up ice blockage. If any pipes are exposed around your house, ensure that they’re covered up to resist freezing. Remember, anything helps, even a small tarp. If possible, shut off the water supply to your air conditioner.

9) Prepare Outdoor Areas

Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks.

10) Prepare an Emergency Kit

Always be ready for the worst! Make sure to have a light source, food, water, and back-up batteries or a power source.

If you’ve got any questions about your heating system, furnace, or staying warm in the winter contact Black Hills Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning! +1 (866) 885-7885

“Heating the home is expensive and one of the leading causes of home fires,” said Scott Conner, Red Cross senior vice president for Preparedness and Health and Safety Services. “We have steps people can follow to cut their risk of starting a fire in their home, and to cut down on their heating bills.

Use Alternative Heaters Safely: First, never use your stove or oven to heat your home. Never leave alternative heaters unattended—turn off space heaters or extinguish the fireplace before going to bed or leaving home. Keep all flammable materials and potential fuel sources—including but not limited to newspapers, matches, bedding, clothing, carpets and rugs—at least three feet away from heat sources such as space heaters, fireplaces and stoves. Place your space heater on a hard, level, nonflammable surface. Do not put space heaters on rugs or carpets, near bedding or drapes, and keep children and pets away. Look for a space heater model that shuts off automatically if the heater falls over. Keep the fire in your fireplace by using a glass or metal screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. Never leave fireplaces unattended. Be sure to have wood and coal stoves, fireplaces, chimneys and furnaces professionally inspected once a year.

Be Prepared: Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home. Check them once a month by pressing the test button, and replace batteries as necessary. Make sure both your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly, and practice your home fire escape plan so every member of your family, including young children and elderly, can get out quickly and safely. Your escape plan should include at least two routes out for every room in the home, and a meeting place outside your home.
Reduce Your Heating Bills: Some experts are predicting that most of the country will see temperatures below normal this winter. The Red Cross offers these suggestions on how to get your home ready for the cold weather.

Simple solutions—Turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater. You’ll be surprised at the savings on your heating bill. Close off any rooms you aren’t using and close heat vents or turn off radiators in those rooms. Make sure heat vents aren’t blocked by furniture. If you can, buy heavy curtains to help keep cold air out of your home, even in the kitchen. Open them during the day to let the sun help warm your house, and close them at night. Use “fabric snakes,” or old rugs in front of windows and doors to help eliminate drafts. If you have a wood burning fireplace, use it to cut down on your heating bill. Make sure you close the damper when not in use or heat will escape through it. If you can seal off the fireplace when not in use, do so. Turn off vent fans in the kitchen and bathroom as soon as the job is done. Set your ceiling fans to blow air down.

Insulate—Drafts mean cold air is leaking into your home. Use either insulating tape or caulking strips to surround your windows and door moldings. You can also cover windows with plastic sheeting. If you have storm windows or storm doors, get them up to keep the cold out. Cold air can even seep into the house through outlets, so insulate your light switch and outlet plates with foam pads.”
