Are You Ready to Go Ductless this Heating Season?

Heating options aren’t limited to the traditional central furnace, which relies on ducts to carry air throughout your home. Not every home as ducts, and even those that do may want to consider an alternate option for home heating. If you’re considering a New Heating System for your home, it pays to consider some alternate options to the standard central heating system.

Are your ready to go ductless this season? There are a lot of good reasons why.

Ducts can do the job, but they’re not as efficient as other forms of heating. They rely almost entirely on hot air blown through your house, which can create drafts and cold spots as well as trouble for those ducts that don’t travel through insulated parts of your home. Furthermore, you don’t normally have options as to which parts of your house get heated. It’s all the same temperature regardless of individual tastes or the fact that you only need to heat the one room you’re using.

A ductless system, on the other hand, usually uses energy much more efficiently than a traditional system. They often use radiant heating or similar methods to warm the air, which doesn’t create a draft and doesn’t need as much energy to leave you feeling toasty and comfortable. Ductless mini split systems and the like usually have zone controls, letting you keep one area of the home warm while leaving the others unheated (saving you money on your monthly bills in the process). Besides saving you money in monthly bills, they also offer you greater control over how and when you heat your home.

Here at Black Hills, Inc. Heating and Air Conditioning our HVAC Installers have extensive experience installing all types of Ductless Heating systems. Do I Need a New Furnace?

Most Home Heating Systems are pretty durable and, with proper installation and regular maintenance, can provide your Washington home with efficient and effective heating for years to come. Like all equipment your furnace is not going to last forever. It can be a difficult decision to make, but it is made a lot easier with the input of a qualified professional. Here is some information from Black Hills, Inc. Heating and Air Conditioning to help with the decision.

The first factor to consider is the performance of your furnace. Heating Systems can last over 2 decades if properly maintained. If you find that your furnace is frequently breaking down or is in need of frequent repairs it may make more sense financially to make the initial investment for a replacement. The cost of doing so can be offset the cost of a professional repair service over time.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even if your furnace is still pretty reliable it simple may not be capable of operating as efficiently as it once did. Even if you do not need to call your professional heating service provide for frequent repairs, increased costs of operation can seriously add up over the years. If your furnace is unable to be restored to initial efficiency capabilities it may be time to replace.

It is also important to keep in mind that technology in the heating industry is always improving. Your furnace may be operating just fine and retaining efficiency, but the efficiency standards at the time of its manufacturing may simply have been much lower than today’s. If you are interested in achieving a level of heating efficiency that your furnace just cannot deliver then a newer model may be what you need.

Contact Black Hills, Inc. Heating and Air Conditioning today to learn all about the new furnace options available to you. We offer top quality Heating & Air Conditioning replacement and installation services throughout the South Puget Sounds area. Call Today to schedule service. +1 (866) 885-7885

5 Myths About Your Home Heating

The heating professionals at Black Hills, Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning want you to understand how to heat your home effectively, efficiently, and economically. Don’t me misled by these common myths.

Bigger is Better.

You may think that a larger furnace will keep you warmer in the winter. It is true that a furnace that is too small will not be able to keep up with your heating needs, however a furnace that is over sized will work just a poorly to heat your home.  When a furnace is oversized, it will cycle on and off more frequently, putting more stress on components, wasting energy, and causing greater variations in temperature.

An appropriately sized furnace will save energy and wear by running in long, even cycles rather than short bursts. When purchasing a furnace, be sure to hire a contractor who uses an industry-standard calculation, which accounts for your climate as well as the house’s size, design, and construction, when determining the appropriate furnace size of your home.

My Furnace works fine, so I don’t need to replace it.

If your furnace is at least 10 years old, it will lack the efficiency of new equipment.  Be alert to the following signs that your furnace should be replaced, even it if still kicks out heat.

    • Your utility bills are higher than they have been in the past. Furnaces often lose efficiency as they age, particularly if they have not undergone regular maintenance.

    • The furnace is making strange noises. This often happens when a furnace nears the end of its life. If the blower runs more than in the past or turns on and off more frequently, or if you hear popping, squealing, banging, or rattling coming from your furnace, it would be wise to begin shopping for a replacement.

    • You have had the furnace repaired in the past two years. Furnaces break down more frequently during the last two years of their lives. This more problematic the older the furnace is. It can take longer to get replacement parts for older furnaces, which leaves you and your family waiting in the cold.

    • The burner flame is yellow. The flame should be blue. A yellow flame indicates a possible carbon monoxide hazard.

I don’t need regular HVAC maintenance. Failing to obtain annual maintenance for your HVAC system shortens its life and increases the risk of introducing carbon monoxide into your home.  You wouldn't let your car go over a year without an oil change.  Maintaining your furnace is just as important.

My utility bills are reasonable.  New high efficiency equipment offers technology advances that will certainly save you money on your utility bills.

Hot and cold spots in my home are normal. Hot and cold spots indicate that your furnace is not able to appropriately distribute the air in your home.  Variable speed motors and zoning systems now available can eliminate this issue in most homes.
